Gang prevention is something that we have had trouble keeping under control since the beginning of humankind, however the more we try the worse it seems to be getting. Should we rely on the government to control gang problems or should we all lend a hand.

Although we should help in the prevention of gang activities, we don’t always know where to begin. Has gangs grown so much that us as normal individuals feel that we are unable to assist. Or do we assume our efforts are in vain and just don’t try at all.

Although gangs are a huge burden on society, we don’t often know a lot about it. To stop gangs, it is imperative to know gangs better, their ways of communication and their behaviours. The police seem to be swamped with crimes committed by gangs and always need the help of everyone to let them know when there are any gang related activities going on.

A gang is generally an organized group of people that share similar traits. They have a name, wear the same colors and engage in illegal acts. Usually gang members come from poverty stricken areas and troubled families and find comfort, acceptance and support in their gangs. They view their fellow gang members as their new family and literally will do anything for this synthetic family.

A lot of the times it is said that gang prevention starts with evaluating the reasons for the formation of gangs. As previously mentioned, gangs are caused by poverty and bad family life, so therefore gang prevention must also include a way of minimizing such causes. This means that people must have jobs and young people should find love and support from people other than gangs.

Gang prevention can also start at home if you think you might know someone involved in gang activities. You will be able to spot a gang member, if you see that person has changed their dress sense and behaviour and all of sudden, has more money and property. If you notice the signs and feel that someone you know is a gang member, then you should report it to the officials. If we try to ignore that gangs exist and feel it’s not our problem, it will only escalate. It is often that gangs are more personal to us than we think.

Strategies For Gang Prevention: You have to try to make sure that young people in your family occupy their time with activities that are wholesome and productive, don’t just allow them to hang around on street corners, the devil makes work for idle hands, make sure that they are involved with organised sports, hobbies and after school activities, these are all excellent ways to fill a young person’s time and make them feel a part of a community.

Faith based organizations are one of the largest gang prevention groups. They assist in all aspects of crime prevention but because they are greatly concerned about the youth, they strive to prevent gangs. Their view is that it is easier for young people to change their paths if they are given more positive things to do, so this is often their focus.

Gang members need to realize that gangs only bring a wasted future and certainly are no solution. Gang prevention should deal with the individual involved in order for them to have hope for a better life.
